Challenging, but it will make you a better historical linguist

As a graduate student of historical linguistics, I thought I had encountered every textbook and handbook of the subject around. I was surprised, however, to find this one. Anthony Fox's LINGUISTIC RECONSTRUCTION, published in 1996 in the series Oxford Textbooks in Linguistics, hasn't gained the popularity of other introductions like Lehmann's or Hock's, but that is a real shame as it is perhaps the most rigorous of them all.

Fox's textbook covers the usual ground of historical linguistics textbooks: the comparative method, internal reconstruction, language contacts, typology, and reconstruction of culture and society from lexicon. Examples are mainly drawn from the comparative study of the Indo-European languages, though Bantu and Austronesian material is also widely used. Like Lehmann in his Theoretical Bases of Indo-European Linguistics, Fox seems to believe that knowing the history of the field and its eminent personalities is just as important as knowing current vogues.

However, Fox's book is special because of the author's honesty about the limitations of each of the various methods of linguistic reconstruction. For example, he explains that the view of the proto-language reconstruction by the comparative method differs from that by internal reconstruction, the first producing large phoneme inventories and the second a simpler inventory. A reasonable reconstruction can only be achieved by a combination of methods. Furthermore, out of all the textbooks for historical linguistics that I know, Fox is the only one that strongly warns the student to ensure that his arguments are not circular. The criticism of glottochronology here is also considerably more devastating than elsewhere.

I would not, however, recommend the book for the complete newbie, as Fox's writing is extremely challenging. Better to enter the field with Campbell's excellent Historical Linguistics, 2nd Edition: An Introduction. Nonetheless, I strongly recommend this book to all who want to refine their skills. I certainly feel that I am a better student after reading Fox's LINGUISTIC RECONSTRUCTION.

Too wordy, no exercises, not enough examples to make you believe that the decried methods work.

On the other had the book is readable, and it might be that the other books on the subject are even worse.

About the Author

Jean-Noël Kapferer is an expert on brand management. His book The New Strategic Brand Management is a key reference work for MBA programs worldwide.  He holds the Pernod-Ricard Chair on Prestige and Luxury Management at HEC Paris.  Also a consultant, he is a member of the board of a major luxury brand, and he frequently gives executive seminars on luxury in China, the US, Japan, Korea and India.

Vincent Bastien is one of the most experienced senior managers in the luxury business.  Formerly MD of Louis Vuitton Malletier and CEO of Yves Saint Laurent Parfums, he has held senior posts at some of the world's most respected luxury brands.  He is now Affiliate Professor at HEC Paris, where he teaches Strategy in Luxury.

Excellent treaty on luxury management

I'm a profane in luxury brand management but have interest on learning about it. It provides a theoretical but clear guide about the rules by which this industry works, includind brand stretching, risk management, luxury VS premium, pricing, distribution, communication, internal management, etc. It formulates rules that before were just implicit. I give it 4 stars instead of 5 for 3 reasons: 1) the overuse of Louis Vuitton as an example. 2) The habit of adding bits and shades to the definition of "luxury" all along the book instead of doing it on a single chapter (though i admit it's a complex concept) and 3) using debatable statements such as classifying BMW as a proper luxury brand but not Mercedes-Benz, even though it's obvious they are direct competitors. Apart from these minor details, a great book nonetheless.

Exzellent book on luxury marketing but kindle version is low quality

I downloaded the book three days ago. This is certainly an outstanding book on luxury and according marketing strategies. However the Kindle-version has terrible flaws, no table of content and no internal references. Also the first chapter (anti-laws of luxury marketing) lacks completely.

Very good book for classroom and for practice!

I have used this book in the classroom as the primary 'text' as well as recommended this book for use in business real-world practice. It is very good for either purpose. The students enjoyed the 'text' as it is comprehensive, easy-to-read for the international student who is ESL, and provocative in thought as it challenges the reader to think outside the typical marketing 4P's structure. For practice, it provides enough theory to answer the 'why' while giving good examples that provide the application. I will - and am - definitely using this book again as well as continuing to recommend it. I have looked at a number of books that could be used in a classroom setting and this one is, by far, the best. This book is a keeper that will stay on a marketer's shelf - for future reference - for a long time.

Dr. Lees has also been inducted into the National Cosmetology Association's Hall of Renown. Dr. Lees is former Chairman of both EstheticsAmerica, the esthetics education division of the National Cosmetology Association, and the Board of the Esthetics Manufacturers and Distributors Alliance. He is co-founder of the Institute of Advanced Clinical Esthetics in Seattle and has served as a CIDESCO International Examiner and on the national Board of Directors of the NCA. In addition, he is also a member of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists. An extremely popular and award-winning speaker, Dr. Lees is constantly in demand for his classes at professional beauty and medical conventions, as well as consumers and women's groups, and major universities including UCLA, Purdue and Columbia Universities. He has also made appearances in both Australia and Europe.
