It's All in the Subtitle
By Robert Morris
Adizes really does explain how and why corporations (indeed all organizations) grow and die...and what to do about it. He has identified a series of specific "lifecycles. His analysis of each (within a sequence) is especially valuable because, as he explains each with meticulous care, each lifecycle is best understood within a broad as well as deep frame of reference. A careful reader of Corporate Lifecycles can thus determine (a) where his or her organization is now within the sequence, (b) what will be required to reach or return to Prime or Stable (the two most desirable locations within the sequence), and (c) what to expect in terms of obstacles, perils, etc. en route.
Because the ideal combination, the ideal balance, of four critical "factors" (ie performance, administration, entrepreneurship, and integration) will always be a "moving target" under constant "attack" by internal as well as external forces, each organization must constantly be aware of what that ideal combination is for it at any given time, what that ideal balance should be. Change is the only constant.
There really isn't another book quite like Corporate Lifecycles. My brief comments can only begin to suggest Adizes' knowledge, wisdom, and experience which enable his reader to understand how and why organizations grow and die...and what to do about it.

Why Read This Book?
By Jack Veale
If you are a person who desires to create change in your organization, improve profitability, manage the implementation of Strategic or Succession plans, or build a management development process, This book is for you! Most of my clients cannot put the book down as they read about their organization and how predictable companies grow and die.
I insist my clients read this book in order for me to help them build strategic or succession plans, as well as implement them. I do not have a CEO or Senior Exec, who has read the book and found it usesless or meaningless. This book helps me communicate with executives, as to what they see and experience within the company, in order for me to help them.
This is a "MUST READ" before you begin a "Change or Strategic Implementation Process." This is not a "touchy-feely" book. It is right to the point, and has good examples of each element. My favorite part is the Insultant vs Consultant discussion.

Corporate Lifecycles
By Mary J. Lore
While this book was written in the 1980's, I believe it is timeless. I consider Corporate Lifecyclesto be one of my top 10 all-time favorite business books and recommend it to all of my business clients. In my book and audio book , Managing Thought: How Do Your Thoughts Rule Your World?, I talk about the power of self-awareness, seeing what is, seeking first to understand vs. being understood, asking questions without blame, judgment or being a victim, and establishing purpose and vision. Corporate Lifecycles does a superb job of showing how to implement these practices in a business environment and how being of highest and best service brings about significant results. He offers proactive measures for maintaining focus and vision, nurturing a climate of mutual trust and respect and avoiding the onset of aging in corporate structures. With Dr. Adizes' strategies to anticipate and ease the normal, predictable problems of growth, every organization can reach Prime -- and stay there.

Asian Financial Statement Analysis: Detecting Financial Irregularities (Wiley Finance), by ChinHwee Tan, Thomas R. Robinson

Gain a deeper understanding of Asian financial reporting and how to detect irregularities

The Asian region, and particularly China, is becoming a hotbed of investment activity. There have been quite a few accounting scandals in Asia in the recent years – now rivaling those we have seen in the Americas and Europe. Assessing potential or active overseas investments requires reliance on financial statements, the full parameters of which may vary from region to region. To effectively analyze statements, it is necessary to first understand the framework underlying these financial statements and then lay out a protocol for detecting irregularities. It's impossible to create and implement a practical plan without a deeper knowledge of the various factors at play.

Asian Statement Analysis: Detecting Financial Irregularities provides a framework for analysis that makes irregularities stand out. Authors Chin Hwee Tan and Thomas R. Robinson discuss international financial reporting standards, including characteristics particular to the Asian region. Tan and Robinson's combined background in academia and Asian finance give them a multi-modal perspective and position them as top authorities on the topic. In the book, they address issues such as:

  • Detection of irregularities independent of particular accounting rules
  • The most common irregularities in the Asian market
  • Similarities and differences between U.S. and Asian accounting techniques
  • An overarching framework for irregularity detection

The book uses real-world examples to illustrate the concepts presented, with the focus on Asian companies. As the first ever in-depth study on manipulation and irregularities in the Asian market, Asian Financial Statement Analysis: Detecting Financial Irregularities is uniquely positioned to be a valuable resource in the move toward the next phase of global reporting standards.

Review
"Written by Tan Chin Hwee, the founding partner in Asia for Apollo Global Management, a leading US$162 billion global alternative investor, among the top three largest in the world; and Tom Robinson, professor of accounting and head of education at the CFA Institute, the book offers a practical framework for performing forensic financial analysis and detecting accounting irregularities." - Daniel Yu, The Asset

"But what if investors were armed with practical tips on what to look for in assessing companies--espeically avoiding the dodgy ones (and maybe even profiting by taking a short sale position)? Here is where Asian Financial Statement Analysis: Detecting Financial Irregularities may become the seminal book that equips investors with what to look out for when assessing investment opportunities in Asia."  - Daniel Yu, The Asset

"Tan and Robinson write that corporate governance has been the Achilles' heel for minority equity shareholders in Asia. Despite being publicly traded, they say that many companies are sitll effectively controlled by the founder or his family; there is nothing inherently wrong with this, but the real winners in many companies are not the minority shareholders. Investors in this region, therefore, will need to be extra vigilant and this book goes a long way in helping strengthen their position." - Daniel Yu, The Asset

From the Inside Flap

Financial scandals and irregularities can occur globally, but most recently have begun a steady climb in Asia. Until now not much had been documented about these incidents, and there remains a significant lack of corporate governance in these markets. Asian Financial Statement Analysis: Detecting Financial Irregularities was created to address this knowledge gap while keeping the global investor in mind. Coauthored by two leading authorities in the field, it is the first ever in-depth study into detecting financial irregularities specifically in the international financial reporting of Asia-Pacific companies.

ChinHwee Tan is highly acclaimed by The Hedge Fund Journal and World Economic Forum and is the founding partner in Asia for a leading global alternative investor, among the largest in the world. Dr. Thomas R. Robinson is Managing Director of the Americas at the CFA Institute and has written and spoken extensively on the subject of financial statement analysis. Together they have created a practical guide for anyone looking to perform effective forensic analysis on the financial statements of Asian companies, generally for the purpose of making solid investment choices.

The first section of the book lays out a proven framework for detecting irregularities in profits, financial position, or cash flow. Its subsequent chapters illustrate the most common irregularities in the Asia-Pacific region and some of the warning signs to look for. Each chapter also includes a useful checklist of different analysis techniques, an overview of the most common games that companies play, and a full case study of an Asia-based company to help illustrate the concepts in a holistic manner. The authors' personal experiences in both global and Asian financial markets enrich the text and offer readers a firsthand look at real world scenarios, helping them further scrutinize companies within that same space.

Asian Financial Statement Analysis: Detecting Financial Irregularities helps professionals navigate the intricacies of investing in Asian business ventures as they look to expand their investment portfolio. It not only offers a comprehensive look at detecting irregularities regardless of accounting rules, but also helps transition professionals into the next phase of global reporting standards. The book is the only resource financial professionals need to better guarantee wise investments and avoid corrupt business practices in the unique Asia-Pacific region.

All that glitters in not gold. This is a great guide to avoiding investment mistakes in Asia
By Lim Jit Soon
Analysts and investors tend to focus on income statements and modeling future earnings in their investment analysis. Not enough attention is given to balance sheets and cashflows. Indeed when a stock becomes the darling of the market, analysts often forget to investigate if indeed “all the glitter is really gold”. Tan and Robinson’s timely book – Asian Financial Statement Analysis: Detecting Financial Irregularities -provides a useful reference and guide for analysts and investors who want to dig deeper into financial statements with the view to avoiding investment mistakes.

Providing a systematic framework and using numerous Asian case studies (including Satyam and Olympus), the authors show readers how to systematically look out for warning signs. Spanning seven chapters and written in a user friendly format, the book covers topics like Detecting Earnings Management and Detecting Overstated Financial Position with relevant case studies embedded in each of the chapters to drive home key lessons.

For those who need a refresher on cashflows, Chapter Five which is entitled “Detecting Overstated Operating Cashflows”, explains how cash flows are constructed and how they can be manipulated to magnify a company’s prospects. The chapter on Evaluating Corporate Governance and Related party issues provides an excellent framework for identifying potential conflicts of interest.

Towards the end of the book, Tan and Robinson thoughtfully puts everything together and offers a “Recipe for Detecting Cooked Books” which outlines the steps required for a thorough analysis of company financial statements. Asian Financial Statement Analysis is a must read for analysts and investors wanting to hone their skills in investment analysis.

The definitive book for Financial Shenanigans in Asia
By Nguyen Dang Trung
As a sell-side credit analyst with a focus on high-yield (junk) bonds in Asia, I took a particular interest in the book because the high-yield bonds and equity markets in Asia have plenty of financial irregularities. I was not disappointed. The book is a wonderful read for any investors and analysts who want to invest in Asia companies, both in bonds or equity. What I like are:

- Simple to understand: As mentioned in the introduction, the author writes with the non-technical readers in mind so he explains the concepts in simple, layman language.

- Well-structured book and well-structured framework to look for fraud: I particularly like how he explained and stressed the interrelationship between income statements, balance sheet and cash flows. He gave various examples of ways to "cook the book" and how to detect such activities. In my humble experience of talking to various investors and analysts in Asia, many people overlook this linkage concept and tend to focus on perhaps the income statements or only the balance sheets. The author pointed out that financial irregularities tend to leave tell-tale signs in other parts of the financial statements and rightly so.

- Plenty of great case studies with lessons at the end: Many of those case studies are well-known if you have followed the due-diligence based research firms and short-sellers such as Muddy Water, Glaucus Research, and Citron Research. If you have not, the case studies will be really eye-opening. The author has summarised them nicely without getting bogged down with details. Many case studies are still new to me.

As a professional habit, I tend to look for peer comparison. The closest peer for this book may be the classic Financial Shenanigans by Howard Schilit and Jeremy Perler, which I have with me too. I found the Tan ChinHwee's book a lot more in-depth and enjoyed it a lot more than the latter. It is also Asia-focused and more relevant to my work. The Financial Shenanigans did not touch on the manipulation of balance sheet and the interrelationship between the three financial statements, for example. While it explains more ways to manipulate incomes statements and cash flows, Tan ChinHwee's book gets deeper to the fundamental of what happens to the balance sheet and cash flows when various items in the income statements get manipulated or vice versa.

In addition, Tan's book has a unique and valuable chapter on Corporate Governance and Related-party Issues which are rampant in Asia. Few other books have touched on it as most investment books so far are written by Westerners. Asian analysts and investors discuss about them but few has written a structured report to analyse it.

I highly recommend the book to any investors in Asia companies.

All Accounting Games Must Come To An End - A Logical and Handy Guide for avoiding value traps and investment missteps
By S. Ching
Many great (and true) things have been said about ‘Asian Financial Statement Analysis’ by other reviewers here. I have nothing but enthusiasm to add to their comments. I would like to affirm one thing in particular - that this book is simple (not easy) enough to be picked up by a non-finance layman, yet deep enough for industry practitioners to mine it repeatedly for insights. Chin Hwee and Thomas have done a wonderful job laying out the technical jargon clearly and concisely. I would like to offer two of my takeaways from the book:

Firstly, I appreciated the fact that the core of the book lies the reminder that all accounting games will come to an end. At first glance, it may seem disheartening to know that if ‘a company wants to intentionally perpetrate fraud, it can be very hard to detect until it is too late, even for experienced auditors and analysts’ (p22). How then, can the man on the street decide which companies are worth his dollar? This is where ‘Asian Financial Statement Analysis’ steps in - while it does not guarantee a foolproof ability in detecting frauds - it does present a comprehensive checklist, coupled with detailed real world case studies to distill key lessons from. At the root of it, the book reminds us that the built in check and balance utility of the accounting framework will eventually overcome the will of the most determined fraudster. For investors, this brings to mind Warren Buffett’s famous punchcard analogy - there are plenty of companies in the world, why force yourself to invest in a company that you see even a single red flag in?

Despite it’s appearance as a numbers driven text, the book’s second fundamental lesson is that companies have real human beings at their helm. While it may be tempting for the analyst to lapse into treating each company as no more than numbers on a paper, this approach misses the root issues of fraud. The last chapter begins with authors reminding us that ‘accounting scandals have been around for as long as capital markets’. This is primarily due to the opportunity created to ‘obscure the true economic picture’ of a business when you separate ‘ownership and control’ (p159). Throughout the book, the authors remind us that misaligned incentives will lead to a higher probability of fraud. Analysts must attempt to understand the psychology and the mentality of the management as well as to look for warning signs in the actions and movements of the Board of Directors in a company. Understanding the motivations and correctly judging the character of the management will put an investor in good stead.

In sum, this book's clear and logical framework of checklists as well as the presence of multiple real world case studies is well worth paying attention to before making any investment. I look forward to future editions with more case studies and lessons to glean from.

Theology of Culture (Galaxy Books), by Paul Tillich

"Theology of Culture" draws together fifteen of Dr. Tillich's finest essays, in which a diversity of contemporary attitudes and problems is brought within the wide scope of his philosophy. His classic essay, "The Two Types of Philosophy of Religion, " is included here as a focal arguement for closing "the fateful gap between religion and culture, thus reconciling concerns which are not strange to each other." Dr. Tillich consequently shows "the religious dimension in many special spheres of man's cultural activity "by discussing religion in relation to art, Existentialism, psychoanalysis, science, and education. He also argues against spiritual and intellectual provincialism by comparing the cultures of Europe and Americal, America and Russia, and the philosophies of Protestantism and Judaism. To those already familiar with Dr.Tillich's writings, this book makes available a selection of his previously scattered esays. For those who are reading his book for the first time, this book brings together the grand motifs of the thought of a great theologian and philosopher.

"This book may well be Tillich's most original work. Here theology and culture really penetrate and Tillich's European background and American context really coalesce....Its publication is a theological event."--Albert C. Outler

Introductory Essays to a Major 20th Century Theologian
By Jeremy Garber
An excellent introduction to Tillich's core concepts, such as religion as ultimate concern, the notion of idolatry, his survey of existentialist philosophy, and the mediation of culture and language. Especially good intro essays are "Aspects of a Religious Analysis of Culture," "The Nature of Religious Language," and "Existential Philosophy: Its Historical Meaning." Some of the collected essays seem designed merely to flesh out the volume, while others (such as Tillich's cultural comparison essays) are outdated or embarassingly provincial. Recommended reading for college philosophy and theology texts, as well as anyone seeking to grasp why Tillich's concepts are still useful (if slightly outdated) today.

Tough, challenging, but worth the work
By Bob
My old college Latin wasn't quite up to some of the work thrust upon it in the early chapters of this book. But stay with it, the Latin disperses like an early morning fog as you get deeper into the volume. I found it very useful. Tillich is father to much of post-modern Protestant theology, it appears.... and probably uncle to a chunk of our new-age thought as well.

Bird Box: A Novel, by Josh Malerman

Written with the narrative tension of The Road and the exquisite terror of classic Stephen King, Bird Box is a propulsive, edge-of-your-seat horror thriller, set in an apocalyptic near-future world—a masterpiece of suspense from the brilliantly imaginative Josh Malerman.

Something is out there . . .

Something terrifying that must not be seen. One glimpse and a person is driven to deadly violence. No one knows what it is or where it came from.

Five years after it began, a handful of scattered survivors remain, including Malorie and her two young children. Living in an abandoned house near the river, she has dreamed of fleeing to a place where they might be safe. Now, that the boy and girl are four, it is time to go. But the journey ahead will be terrifying: twenty miles downriver in a rowboat—blindfolded—with nothing to rely on but her wits and the children’s trained ears. One wrong choice and they will die. And something is following them. But is it man, animal, or monster?

Engulfed in darkness, surrounded by sounds both familiar and frightening, Malorie embarks on a harrowing odyssey—a trip that takes her into an unseen world and back into the past, to the companions who once saved her. Under the guidance of the stalwart Tom, a motely group of strangers banded together against the unseen terror, creating order from the chaos. But when supplies ran low, they were forced to venture outside—and confront the ultimate question: in a world gone mad, who can really be trusted?

Interweaving past and present, Josh Malerman’s breathtaking debut is a horrific and gripping snapshot of a world unraveled that will have you racing to the final page.

From Booklist
Malorie, a young mother of two children known simply as Boy and Girl, is a survivor living in a postapocalyptic world, raising her children to use all their senses, especially their listening skills, as sight is not an option here. In this world, the survivors struggle to stay alive by living indoors with all the windows boarded up. The sight of whatever is outside is causing people to become violent murderers, as well as suicidal, in the most horrific ways possible. The book moves back and forth over a four-year period when all the insanity began, exploring the personalities of the people that came together and survived and how they managed to live after all forms of communication effectively withered and died with most of the population. The characters are involving, the story moves along very rapidly as the suspense builds, but unfortunately, the ending is a disappointment. The reason for all the bloodshed is never explored or explained. Still, recommend this one to readers who enjoy a blend of horror and postapocalyptic fiction. --Stacy Alesi

Review
“A book that demands to be read in a single sitting, and through the cracks between one’s fingers. There has never been a horror story quite like this. Josh Malerman truly delivers.” (—Hugh Howey, New York Times bestselling author of Wool)

“This completely compelling novel contains a thousand subtle touches but no mere flourishes-it is so well, so efficiently, so directly written I read it with real admiration. Josh Malerman does the job like a fast-talking, wised-up angel.” -Peter Straub (—Peter Straub)

“[A] chilling debut… Malerman...keeps us tinglingly on edge with his cool, merciless storytelling [and] douses his tale in poetic gloom….An unsettling thriller, this earns comparisons to Hitchcock’s The Birds, as well as the finer efforts of Stephen King and cult sci-fi fantasist Jonathan Carroll.” (—Kirkus Reviews (starred review))

“The author uses understatement and allusion to create a lean, spellbinding thriller that Stephen King fans will relish.” (—Publishers Weekly (starred review))

What a nasty little treat this was.
By booknerdsbraindump
This book was recommended to me by a friend who apparently knows me better than I know myself. I don’t usually read speculative fiction, as I generally like my trash a little more grounded in reality, which is to say, even the horrors of the night won’t keep us all away from Facebook. As such, post-apocalyptic stuff usually doesn’t interest me. I mean, there are only so many ways to tell the story of “we have to rebuild civilization while protecting ourselves from whatever destroyed it”, right?

Bird Box is the same, but catchier. It opens with a woman named Malorie waking up and deciding that today is the day she will row twenty miles down a river, blindfolded, with her two young children, to try to reach other survivors. And that’s when I said “wait, hold up. Twenty miles to where? Why blindfolded? Survivors of what?” And just like that, Josh Malerman got me.

It all begins five years before, in the present day, somewhere in Russia. A couple of guys are in a car, the passenger asks the driver to pull over, then viciously and gruesomely murders him and kills himself. It’s a weird anomaly, like the guy who ate the other guy’s face in Florida a while back. Normally, a story like that would hit the news, then fade. But before long, there are many more such stories that all end the same way - with the perpetrator killing themselves before anyone can find out why. And as the events spread to the US, there are more and more paranoid theories, and fewer and fewer people to repeat them. The only constant is that the people who have been driven mad have opened their eyes outside.

Malorie has just found out she is pregnant when she loses her sister, parents, and everyone else she has known. She finds a house with a few other survivors, and the grim vigil begins.

The only way to describe Bird Box is as a whirlpool. We see Malorie of today, blindfolded with two small blindfolded children, navigating a river by sound alone, then we circle back to the house where she waits to give birth, then back to today. With every loop, the pace of the story picks up, and we are drawn more and more quickly to the center, the horrific night that the babies are born, and the fate of the others who were in the house. Simultaneously, there are fresh nightmares on the river in a number of flavors, including the creatures that have nearly destroyed humanity, a bad guy of the human variety, and even wolves.

Bird Box was short and nasty in the best way. It’s like jalapeno fudge. It doesn’t sound that good, really. As I said, speculative, post-apocalyptic works usually turn me off. But hey, I do love chocolate, so I decided to try a bite. It was sweet and smooth, then BAM the heat kicked in. Totally different from what I usually enjoy, an unexpected jolt, but delicious nonetheless.

The babies added a deeper level of emotion to the narrative. The fear and tension were unrelenting in both storylines, but seeing what Malorie went through to keep the little ones safe threw an element of heartbreak into the mix. It was actually harder for me to read how she trained them to always keep their eyes shut than to read the graphic murder/suicide passages.

The prose is not poetic, but smooth, not descriptive, more statement of fact. I will admit, I initially wanted more description. I think I was spoiled by The Stand (uncut version) where every nuance of the End of the World was spelled out in excruciating detail. With Bird Box, there’s just one word - creatures - and we are left knowing exactly what Malorie knows, which isn’t much at all.

In the end, it’s that leanness that is Bird Box’s strength and weakness. You’re thrown from one time period and situation to another, all of them breathlessly tense, until the final few pages. There’s no nice neat bow tying everything up. There’s no awkward explanation shoe-horned in. It’s less about the how and why, and more about the “now what?”.

Malerman’s stripped-down prose is a perfect way to drive the narrative, but it doesn’t work as well when it comes to characters other than Malorie. Tom is the generic Calm Wise Leader. The other women are just… there, and with the exception of the bad guy(s) (no spoilers here!) the rest of men are interchangeable. We got a few sentences of backstory for some of them, but there isn’t enough to differentiate them from each other, or to generate any real emotion for the ones that are lost.

Overall, Bird Box’s strengths far outweigh its weaknesses, and I look forward to seeing what Josh Malerman does in the future.

A fine unique wine of a horror novel, where every sip will give you the cold shivers
By Whitt Patrick Pond
Bird Box by John Malerman is absolutely one of the most tensely claustrophobic horror novels I've ever read. Some horror is based on fear of things you see. And some horror is based on fear of things you don't see. Bird Box has a different kind of horror going on - a fear of things that you must not see.

Malorie lives in rural Michigan, in a run-down house with two small children. The three of them have not seen or spoken to another human being in four years. All of the windows and doors have been carefully covered over with blankets, tape, paper, tarps, anything to prevent any possibility of ever glimpsing anything outside the house, even by accident. When Malorie has to go outside, she wears a blindfold tied tightly in place. The children sleep with blindfolds in carefully covered pens. Because there are _things_ out there, and to see them, even for a second, means madness and painful torturous death. But the day has come when Malorie and the two children must leave the house, feel their way to a boat on the river, and then blindly make their way down the river, in the hope that maybe, just maybe, there's a place of safety that still exists in the world.

The chapters alternate, sometimes in the present, more often in the past as we learn about the events of the preceding five years that led to Malorie's current situation. A lot of what makes Bird Box work is the atmosphere Malerman creates for the reader where he immerses you into a world where there's something out there, something that if seen, even by accident, even for a second, results in murderous insanity and death. Something that no one knows what it looks like because no one who sees it, even indirectly, survives intact to describe it. And you can feel Malorie's mounting apprehension early on in flashbacks as the outside world grows more and more ominous:

"It is six months before the children are born. Malorie is showing. Blankets cover every window in the house. The front door is never left unlocked and never left open. Reports of unexplainable events have been surfacing with an alarming frequency. What was once breaking news twice a week now develops every day. Government officials are interviewed on television. Stories from as far east as Maine, as far south as Florida, have both sisters now taking precautions. Shannon, who visits dozens of blogs daily, fears a mishmash of ideas, a little bit of everything she reads. Malorie doesn't know what to believe. New stories appear hourly online. It's the only thing anybody talks about on social media and it's the only topic on the news pages. New websites are devoted entirely to the evolution of information on the subject. One site features only a global map, with small red faces placed upon the cities in which something occurred. Last time Malorie checked, there were more than three hundred faces. Online, they are calling it 'the Problem.' There exists the widespread communal belief that whatever 'the Problem' is, it definitely begins when a person _sees_ something.
-- Malorie resisted believing it as long as she could. The sisters argued constantly, Malorie citing the pages the derided mass hysteria, Shannon citing everything else. But soon Malorie had to relent, when the pages she frequented began to run stories about their own loved ones, and the authors of these pages stepped forward to admit some concern.
-- Cracks, Malorie thought then. Showing even in the skeptics.
-- Days passed in which Malorie experienced a sort of double life. Neither sister left the house anymore. Both made sure the windows were covered. They watched CNN, MSNBC, and Fox News until they physically couldn't watch the same stories repeating themselves. And while Shannon grew more serious, and even grave, Malorie held on toe a pinch of hope that this would all simply go away.
-- But it didn't. And it got worse.
-- Three months into living like shut-ins, Malorie and Shannon's worse fears came true when their parents stopped answering their phone. They didn't answer e-mails either.
-- Malorie wanted to drive north to the Upper Peninsula. But Shannon refused.
-- "We're just going to have to hope they're being safe, Malorie. We're going to have to hope their phone was shut off. Driving anywhere right now would be dumb. Even to the store, and driving nine hours would be suicide."
-- 'The Problem' always resulted in suicide. Fox News had reported the word so often that they were now using synonyms. 'Self-destruction.' 'Self-immolation.' 'Hari-Kari.' One anchorman described it as 'personal erasing,' a phrase that did not catch on. Instructions from the government were reprinted on the screen. A national curfew was mandated. People were advised to lock their doors, cover their windows, and, above all, not to look outside. On the radio, music was replaced entirely with discussions.
-- A blackout, Malorie thinks. The world, the outdoors, is being shut down."

What's even more remarkable about Bird Box is that it's Malerman's first novel. It was nominated this year for the Bram Stoker Award for Best First Novel, a nomination that was well deserved.

Highly, highly recommended for anyone who enjoys a novel that will literally make you afraid to look up or turn around.

So apropos for this spooky time of year!
By Basia
I'll confess the following straight away: I have three favorite spooky, creepy, super scary books this year. The Light of the Fireflies remains my #1 favorite. It's so "cult classic," yet deserves a much wider audience. Finished it weeks ago, and I still think about it. Unlike any story I've ever read. Then my 2nd choice: The Last Days of Jack Sparks. Awesome. Funny in a way that often makes one feel a bit guilty for laughing, but oh my goodness, does it ever offer up a bunch of scares. And now to my 3rd favorite: The Bird Box.
This book was also unusual, and that's no easy feat with a post-apocalyptic, dystopian story. We don't really ever find out too much about what all went wrong with the world; we learn only that no human can survive seeing whatever horrors remain out in the open world.
The protagonist describes her daily life to us as best she can, given that she has been unable to EVER open her eyes outside. She also cares for a 4 year old. Part of the story is also comprised of her flashbacks to a time when there were a number of people in her party.
It is such an unsettling story. The absence of sufficient information to allow us even the most elementary grasp on what has happened, what horrors exist that would so affect a person just by being seen that they would cease to be human or alive, or in any case, would no longer be counted amongst the living, these ideas creep the hell out of the reader...or at least they did me. Maybe they die from the sight. Or perhaps it drives them mad. What is not questionable is that seeing one of these horrors marks the end of that person's life.
Quietly unforgettable, and superb at getting under one's skin, I highly recommend this awesome horror story. And lucky for us all, it's another one of those books that grabs hold at page 1, and won't let go until the last page. I hope those of you who end up reading the book enjoy it AT LEAST as much as I did.

Brothers of the Knight (Picture Puffin Books), by Debbie Allen

Debbie Allen's contemporary retelling of the classic tale The Twelve Dancing Princesses with illustrations from Kadir Nelson!

Reverend Knight can't understand why his twelve sons' sneakers are torn to threads each and every morning, and the boys aren't talking. They know their all-night dancing wouldn't fit with their father's image in the community. Maybe Sunday, a pretty new nanny with a knack for getting to the bottom of household mysteries, can crack the case. This modern, hip retelling of the classic tale The Twelve Dancing Princesses bursts with vibrant artwork and text that's as energetic as the twelve toe-tapping Knight brothers themselves.

"A funky, fresh adaptation." —Publishers Weekly

"This is a high-flying alternative to the tale's usual dainty renditions." —Kirkus Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
The Twelve Dancing Princesses have nothin' on the 12 sons of Reverend Knight, a Harlem preacher. Narrating the tale in a chatty if somewhat rambling voice, the family dog, Happy, explains that this man "raised his sons with a firm, loving hand... but a lot was goin' on that couldn't be explained." Actress, choreographer and producer Allen gives a familiar tale a hip spin as the brothers dance each night from one roof to the next to reach the Big Band Ballroom. There they swing till dawn, returning home with shoes "worn to threads, messed up, torn up, stinky, dirty, tacky, jacked up." Sunday, a sharp, attractive housekeeper with magical powers, discovers the siblings' secret, but she keeps mum, waiting instead until the kids themselves are ready to 'fess up to their dad. They don't and she quits, but all ends happily. Successfully capturing the energy of the swirling, twirling nighttime revelers, first-time children's book artist Nelson's sepia-toned illustrations possess the precision of line accorded to pen-and-inks, filled out with a full palette of oil paints. He's equally adept with the interiors of the church as with rooftop scenes of the boys whooping it up under starlit skies. A funky, fresh adaptation. Ages 5-up. (Sept.)

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 4-A spin-off of the Grimm tale, "The Twelve Dancing Princesses," this is the story of Preacher Knight and his attempts to solve the mystery of the worn-out sneakers he finds in his sons' room each morning. Believing that their father would not approve of their clandestine dancing at the Big Band Ballroom, the 12 boys refuse to confide in him. Only when the ingenious housekeeper, Sunday, attempts to reveal the brothers' secret is Reverend Knight's own predilection for dancing disclosed and the family-along with the bewitching Sunday-reconciled. The setting for Allen's fresh imagining is "a little village called Harlem." Her hip text is given spark and personality through the use of contemporary dialect: Sunday's cookies " were jump up and down, slap yo' own self in the face good!" The humor of the story is heightened by the artwork. Nelson's pencil drawings were photocopied and then painted in oils, producing a fine line, minutely detailed characters and settings, and expressively lit coloration. The strutting, high-stepping brothers are full of individuality, attitude, and movement. Text is boxed with old frayed sneakers and laces. Few elements of the Grimm tale remain, except the worn shoes, the illicit dancing, the outsider who solves the mystery, and the cloak of invisibility. However, new elements, such as the gender change and the brothers' motivation for secrecy, fit neatly. The choice of the family dog as narrator is the only false note. His expository remarks, though humorous, sometimes interrupt the flow. Still, don't let this small flaw keep this original title off your dance card.

From Kirkus Reviews
Spun from a live performance at the Kennedy Center, this urban version of ``The Twelve Dancing Princesses'' is a strong picture-book debut for both Allen and Nelson. Reverend Knight, a Harlem minister, can't understand why his twelve sons' hightops are ``worn to threads, messed up, torn up, stinky, dirty, tacky, jacked up'' each and every morning. Promising to get to the bottom of it all, winsome Sunday, latest in a long line of housekeepers, whips out a cloak of invisibility and follows the boys night after night to the Big Band Ballroom. When she confronts them, they confess: they love to dance, but fear their father's disapproval. Posed in theatrical arrangements and postures, Nelson's exuberant figures fill his stage-like scenes. In the end, the boys tell all, the reverend admits that he too used to cut the rug, and the stage is set for a swinging finale. This is a high-flying alternative to the tale's usual dainty renditions. (Picture book/folklore. 6-8) -- Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.
