A Fascinating Book About Ancient Rituals Still Practiced Today

This book tells of a discovery which has great intrigue. Archeology is one of my keen interests, and Ecstatic Body Postures describes a study of unique body positions that were discovered in many ancient clay and stone statuettes. Brenda Gore tells of an archeologist who was intrigued by them, and through her investigations, learned that the figurines were describing various positions for obtaining deep meditation. The archeologist then studied the religions of aboriginies, ancient tribes of South America, and the American Indians. She was astounded to find the same kinds of body positions found in the ancient statues, were still practiced today by these tribes through their religious preformances. She also learned that they use various rhythms, by the use of anything from shaking gourds with pebbles in them, to musical intstraments. The archeologist who discovered this has passed away, however there are now groups of non-tribal people who experiment with these positions and noise-makers.The amazing discovery is that while doing so, they see and hear strange visions and sounds, depending upon which position they use. This book describes the positions and types of visions that each body position evokes. I found Ecstatic Body Postures fascinationg, informative and very well written.

Very effective for shamanic journeying

I held a "get to know your spirit guide" workshop for 10 people who'd more or less connected with their spirit guides through a guided meditation at prior group workshops.They had no shamanic training of any kind. Every one of the 10 had a successful journey using basic "core shamanism" techniques and the South American Lower World Posture described on page 191.

It's far more typical for this level of connection to take time and practice, and from what I've observed as a student in shamanic workshops, I'd put the typical success rate for beginners at about 30%. I think these results were remarkable, and plan to explore further. (I do not, BTW, recommend shamanic journeying without the guidance of an experienced practitioner.)

shamanic "asana" handbook...

The book contains enough different positions based on historical objects found within shamanic cultures, to keep you busy working for a long, long time...particular considering that reaching any depth with one particular position may take a lot of work.
Yes, as mentioned in another review, it is suggested that these positions be used while someone is drumming or rattling for you...or while using a CD and headset (the neighbors are less likely to call the cops), but it would be nice to have had a little more discussion about the use of medicine plants with the various positions...as probably that was one of the traditional "triggers" to begin with. Perhaps the author just wanted to keep away from the political/legal problems in that.
If you're serious about doing shamanic work, and want to "do" rather than just read about someones "cool visions"...this makes an excellent handbook.
The illustrations aren't terrible or anything...certainly they're sufficient, but it would have been a tad better if some of them were a little clearer/detailed...particularly the illustrations of original artifacts.

The content of the book itself is great, but the binding and printing are seriously sub-Kinko's quality. And Routledge has the audacity to charge $35 for the book. Unbelievable.

Provides Focus for Learning German Vocabulary

Every teacher of the German language whose native language is English should have this vocabulary guide. It provides essential data on how often German words occur, which can help prioritize learning when time is short. I have found it motivates learning to know the most commonly used words. I use it in conjunction with a good German/English dictionary.

I'm finding this dictionary of frequency very useful for making flashcards to increase my vocabulary. While there are frequency lists online, the ones I've found don't usually take the time to eliminate all the different forms of a given word. They also don't give example sentences like this book does.

Good, short read; solid continuation of the series

The Bronze Key is the third installment for The Magisterium series. It is a powerful addition to the series, and I had been waiting for it and purchased it on the day it came out. With that, keep in mind that this little review is from the point of view of a fan of the series.

This book feels a tad shallow, to be honest. It's writing is light, just a bit too light, and only hints at deeper themes. That's also not a bad thing, because the intended audience is clearly a younger one; perhaps just a few years younger than a Harry Potter audience. It's also terribly short, though that might just be due to the fact that I read through it in one sitting, eating up each page excitedly.

The story, however, is deliciously unique and deliciously interesting. Even as an adult, I find that I love it. This sequel has managed to continue that. A new, intriguing character is introduced-- Anastasia, a mysterious Assembly Mage who seems obsessed with white-- and current characters get more fleshed out. We learn more about Alex, are shocked by criminal acts, feel our trust betrayed, and ultimately follow the story, riveted, because it is interesting.

So it's a good book. I won't go into too much depth, because who needs to read spoilers? But if you've read the first two, and you're fine with the writing being just a bit light (I would personally /love/ this series written with a lot more exposition and depth, but to each their own), then this book will be excellent for you. Particularly if you want to see a bit more of the dynamic for Callum and Aaron, who actually seem to interact more and better in this book than the previous ones.

Short and fun middle grade fantasy read.

This is the third book in the Magisterium series which is planned to have five books in it. This was an excellent continuation of the Magisterium series, I really enjoyed this book a lot. This has been a well done middle grade fantasy series which both me and my 9 year old son enjoy.

We see a lot more of Call and Aaron wielding their Makar talents in this book and learn a lot more about Chaos magic. Call isn’t questioning his evilness quite as much but is still struggling with the idea that he is the soul of an evil mage reborn.

Much of the story is focused on Call, Aaron, and Tamara trying to track down a spy in the school...a spy who may also be a murderer. Some interesting secrets are revealed about Call’s past and Aaron is struggling with what it means to be a Makar.

Overall this is a quick and fun read and I enjoyed it a lot. These characters are fun and engaging and the story takes some unexpected turns throughout. I think fans of middle grade fantasy will enjoy this series a lot. I love the elemental magic in it and how well the writing flows. I am looking forward to see what happens in book four.

Although not as good as previous books and ends on a annoying cliffhanger

Although not as good as previous books and ends on a annoying cliffhanger, still the over all story has kept me engaged and coming back for more. I am starting to take issue with the nature of the books ending unresolved in any reasonable way. I did not really have that problem with the first ones, but this one didn't end. It just dropped you off in the middle of the story like the season end of a tv series. At this point, although I still like the overall story and honestly cannot predict where it is going, I don't want to keep reading books that never end. I also have hesitations in recommending this book for younger students as it is getting very very dark and I am not sure that would be appropriate for their age group. Still, this is the first time the story has "dipped" like this so I am reserving judgement on the whole series until I read the next one.
